3) Red Dead Redemption 2
I almost didn’t put this on my list as I like to try to be a bit different and I imagine this will appear on a lot of other people’s lists. But how could I not? The single player was magnificent, and even though you could make a good guess about the fate of Arthur Morgan before the game had had even started, he was such a well written and enjoyable character to play as, whether you wanted to be a ‘good’ or a ‘bad’ cowboy there was a lot to love. I understand the concerns about the pace of the game or the amount of time you could spend on horseback, but for me that was part of the RDR world and something to soak in. The only let down for me with this game was the online which I didn’t get as into as I would have expected.
2) The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
After loving Until Dawn, I had high hopes for Man of Medan and to my delight I ended up having a lot of fun with it, whether it was on my own or playing with a friend. Enaksan and I even did two sessions in different days where we played and completed the story in one night just to see the other players perspectives. Once I save a few pennies I can’t wait play the next instalment, Little Hope.
1) Dragon Age: Inquisition
This was first game that came into my head when I was asked to make this list. A game I’ve put hundreds of hours into over the last 6 years. A game I love so much I played it on someone else’s profile to get the achievements for them (Can you guess the Tavern member this was?). The gameplay, graphics, lore and story is/was amazing, there was so much dialogue it has made me play the game over and over just to hear what everyone would say at the key story moments. I understand this is a marmite game for people, but I would guess 9/10 of those people didn’t make it past the Hinterlands in the early part of the game. If I were to make a list of my Top 5 games of all time, this would be in it.
Honorable Mentions:
Final Fantasy VIII Remaster: Final Fantasy VIII is my GOAT, but even though it’s as perfect as ever, I couldn’t in good conscience put a remaster in a ‘game of this generation’ list.
Sniper Elite 4: A gem I found on Game Pass during the 2020 lockdown, I wasn’t really interested in the story but sneaking around the map sniping people whilst trying to not get caught was a nice release from the real world.
Final Fantasy XV: The game that nearly kept RDR2 off the list, I didn’t end up playing this until a year or so after it’s release, a big regret of mine! I’m a big fan of the Final Fantasy franchise but was rather “meh” on its release, that’ll teach me!
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor: Another game I played a few years after its release, I was hesitant to play it as after playing Black Flag I was growing a bit tiresome of the Assassins Creed franchise, but it ended up being another game I regretted not playing sooner, mostly thanks to the Nemesis system.
