Our Top Ten Game Picks From E3 2018

E3 2018 has been one hell of a solid event. It doesn’t matter what platform you game on or which developer you favor over the other, each of them delivered a strong lineup with a well-set presence. With so many new and exciting announcements and reveals, it’s hard to nail down which titles or reveals truly stole the spotlight. We’ve compiled a list of our top ten picks from E3 2018. Believe me when I say that it was a hard list to form, though, we think we’ve chosen our selected games quite well. Without further delay, here they are.

Resident Evil 2 – Trailer

Resident Evil 2’s remake has been a long time coming. Fans have been asking for this since soon after the release of Resident Evil’s remake back on the GameCube. No doubt fans will soon start seeking a remake of Nemesis, but that’s for another time. Capcom unveiled Resident Evil 2 remarkably well through a reveal trailer and some gameplay footage. Safe to say, the game is shaping up nicely. It looks dark, it looks fresh, it looks terrifying and it looks familiar. Will the end result live up to the original version? One can only hope that it will.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – Trailer

Of all the games from Xbox’s briefing this year, Sekiro: Shadows Die surprised me the most. It’s just not something you would expect to see at an Xbox briefing, which is bloody brilliant if you ask me. FromSoftware (Dark Souls) pegs Sekiro as a third-person action-adventure game that tells a story of vengeance. The titular Sekiro sets off to exact revenge on the samurai who killed his lord and left him for dead. It looks breathtaking, brutal and thoroughly immersive. This is the sort of interesting stuff Microsoft really needs to invest in.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps – Trailer

Ori and the Blind Forest is one of the best platformers on Xbox One to this day. It had every function and every mechanic down to near perfection, tethered to an excellent pace and a heart warming story or solitude and survival. Its sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, looks equally as stunning. Seeing this at E3 2018 only raised the level of hype to new heights. I don’t know about you, but I, for one, am overly excited about Ori’s return. One thing is for certain, its predecessor set a very high bar for the sequel to meet. That’s for damn sure.

Cyberpunk 2077 – Trailer

CD Projekt RED are well known for The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, one of the best RPGs of all time. Their stance on a fair and consistent post-launch road-map has earned them a well deserved reputation. They’re not here to bleed you dry. They’re here to deliver very deep and very rich stories. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of those stories and after a number of years, CDPR finally stepped up and broke radio silence. The end result? One of the most fascinating trailers of E3 2018. You can expect depth, quality and bundles of longevity.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey – Trailer

I absolutely loved Assassin’s Creed Origins. I thought the shift in the formula was a refreshing change of pace and one that breathed new life into the tired series. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey trades Ancient Egypt for Ancient Greece and is said to be even deeper than that of its immediate predecessor. This is made apparent by the ability to choose a male or female character from the get-go, the romance options, the countless hours of story-altering dialogue choices and much more. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey was an easy choice.

Fallout 76 – Trailer

Fallout 76 is easily one of the most interesting game reveals of the year. The game serves as a prequel to all other Fallout games released so far, and furthermore, its very design and foundation is the most unique in the series too. Fallout 76 is said to be four times larger than Fallout 4 and will be played online alongside other players and settlements through dedicated servers. The game will compile elements from previous Fallout games, such as base building, but all in all, it’s set to be the most distinct out of the lot. We can hardly wait.

Anthem – Trailer

Let’s not pretend that EA are not in hot water at the moment. The stench of Battlefront II still lingers in the air and EA’s behavior surrounding the handling of that game, equally as such. Anthem, on the other hand, may well be the turn-around that EA so desperately needs. If any game in the near future is to compete with the likes of Destiny 2 and The Division 2, it’s Anthem; an online multiplayer action RPG that will be the beginning of a ten year long journey. Anthem not only sounds incredible, it freakin’ well looks it too.

The Division 2 – Trailer

When Ubisoft released The Division, it went on to smash internal and external records across the globe. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was easily one of Ubisoft’s most entertaining games at its time. It came as little surprise to learn that a sequel was in the works, something Ubisoft finally lifted the lid on at E3 2018 via their own briefing and Xbox’s briefing. The developer has promised that they’ve taken all feedback from the first game to ultimately produce a sequel that’s more refined and much deeper than the first. #HellYes

Shadow of the Tomb Raider – Trailer

You know, Lara can be quite the mass murderer when she wants to be. E3 2018 showcased some new footage for the game, highlighting the new mechanics and tools at Lara’s disposal as she goes about her business bringing down the ruthless Trinity, once and for all. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is set to conclude the origin trilogy, so it’s a guess for anyone as to what will come next. However, focusing on the here and now, Lara’s upcoming journey looks wonderful, in-depth and intriguing. Let’s hope that it concludes the trilogy with a bang.

Devil May Cry 5 – Trailer

Unpopular opinion here, but I rather enjoyed DmC. Sure, it was a massive step away from Devil May Cry 4, but I had quite a lot of fun nevertheless. Shocking nobody (thanks to a heap of leaks beforehand) Capcom unveiled Devil May Cry 5 for the first time at the Xbox briefing and it went down an absolute treat. This is the true sequel to Devil May Cry 4 and will conclude the Sons of Sparda saga, at long last. Going from the tone of the new trailer, expect nothing less than action, variety and a sizable dollop of that trademark humor.

What do you think of these titles? Do you have any that you would have swapped out for any of the above? Have you enjoyed E3 2018 so far? Got anything that you would like to add? Go ahead and sound off in the comments below to make yourselves heard.

Howdy folks! Now, as of July 23rd, 2019, I no longer operate here at Xbox Tavern. It was one hell of a ride; creating this, building this, and operating it for several years, but, we all hit a proverbial point that encourages us to move on, and that's what I've done; handing the reigns to the very capable Jamie.
